Looking to add central air conditioning to your home, but traditional systems aren’t an option? High-velocity AC systems are an excellent alternative for many homes, including those with space constraints, plaster walls, or architectural designs that can’t accommodate large ductwork. These high-velocity systems use smaller, flexible ducts to move cold air throughout your entire home.

How High-Velocity AC Transforms Your Home

A high-velocity air conditioning system is composed of two key parts:

Cooling That Fits Anywhere

High-velocity systems fit wherever you need them. The ducts are far smaller than traditional ducts, only about 2 inches in diameter. Their compact size allows them to be engineered and maneuvered to fit into tight spaces like walls, attics, or crawlspaces without major renovations. In comparison, traditional ducts are commonly 6” in diameter and have large “trunklines” that are often 8”x18”. Unlike traditional systems, high-velocity ducts preserve your home’s original design while delivering powerful airflow.

The compact size of these ducts means that air is pushed through the system at nearly four times the speed of traditional systems. This high velocity eliminates hot spots, reduces humidity by up to 30%, and ensures consistent, even temperatures throughout your home.

Air Handler

The air handler is the system's powerhouse. Smaller than those used in conventional air conditioning systems, the high-velocity air handler can be tucked away in a closet or attic, keeping it discreet yet effective. It takes up space inside, but it is perfect for buildings without outdoor access, such as high-rise apartments.

The Benefits of High-Velocity Air Conditioning

  • Even Cooling
Tired of uneven temperatures or hot pockets? The high-speed airflow of a high-velocity AC system keeps every corner of your home cool and comfortable.
  • Energy Efficiency Meets Quiet Performance
A less humid home means your system doesn’t need to work as hard, resulting in lower energy bills. Proper humidity levels are also necessary to reduce the likelihood of mold growth. The compact, modern design is quiet, so you won’t hear the clunky sounds associated with older systems.
  • Customized Installation
High-velocity systems can be installed without significant modifications to your home, so they’re ideal for retrofitting older homes. Their flexible ductwork can be placed where you need it, not where traditional ducting demands. High-velocity systems are customized for your home, which means ductwork can be run to the rooms that need cooling most.

Considerations for Your Home

Upfront Cost vs. Long-Term Savings

Retrofitting your home for high-velocity air conditioning may cost more upfront than window units or split systems. However, the energy efficiency and reduced maintenance mean you’ll save in the long run.

FAQ's

What is the best location to install a high velocity air handler?

The best location for a High Velocity air handler depends on your situation, but we prefer to start as high up in the home as possible. It is easier to push the air down throughout the home as opposed to pushing it up into the rising hot air. Remember hot air rises, so cold air falls! The most popular locations for installation are the attic and top floor knee walls or closets.

Can a high velocity AC system work with existing ductwork?

Unfortunately, no. A High Velocity system uses unique insulated 2” flexible ductwork that is specially designed to deliver air quietly and efficiently at increased speeds. This ductwork can be fished through closets, walls, and floors in order to not take up living space.

Can I also run my home’s heat through a high velocity system?

While rare, we are able to install two options for heating through a High Velocity system. For more information, please visit our heat pump service page.

How long do High Velocity Air Conditioning Systems Last?

With proper installation and maintenance, High Velocity systems can last up to 20 years.

How much does a High Velocity system cost?

Because of the ductwork installation, High Velocity systems can vary from $28,000 to $60,000. However, high velocity air conditioning is proven to save money long-term. High Velocity systems are extremely efficient which lowers energy bills. Ease of installation also means maintenance bills will be at a minimum.
